Chesney perpetuates the phenomenon of half a century.. and deprives Al-Dosari of a record achievement
Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny joined the distinguished list after defeating Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup.
The Polish national team defeated its Saudi counterpart 2-0 today, Saturday, at the Education City Stadium, as part of the second round matches in Group C in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Chesney saved a penalty kick executed by Salem Al-Dossary in the 45th minute, when the result indicated that Poland advanced 1-0.
According to the "Opta" statistics network, Chesney became the third goalkeeper to save a penalty kick and keep a clean sheet in the same match in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
She explained that Chesney joined the duo, Thibaut Courtois, goalkeeper of Belgium, and Ochoa, goalkeeper of Mexico.
The network added that this phenomenon is the most common occurrence in the World Cup during one edition, starting with the 1966 World Cup (about half a century ago).
Saudi numbers
On the other hand, Chesney deprived Saudi star Salem Al-Dossary of equalizing a historic record in the World Cup.
Al-Dosari was preparing to sign his third goal in the history of his participation in the World Cup, had it not been for the brilliance of Chesney, who deprived Najm Al-Akhdar of equaling the number of his compatriot Sami Al-Jaber, who is the most Arab player scoring goals in the World Cup (3 goals).
Al-Dosari had scored his first goal against Egypt in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, then added the second goal against Argentina in the opening match of Al-Akhdar’s career in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Al-Dosari also failed to equal the number of his compatriot Fouad Anwar, who is the only Saudi who scored two goals in one World Cup (1994), against the Netherlands and Morocco in the group stage.
Al-Dosari is also considered the second Saudi player to miss a penalty kick in the World Cup, after Fahd Al-Muwallad missed a kick against an Egyptian in 2018.
This is the sixth penalty kick awarded to Al-Akhdar in all his participation (so far) in the World Cup: he scored 4 and missed 2.
Sami Al-Jaber scored two penalty kicks against Morocco and South Africa in the World Cup (94, 98), and Youssef Al-Thunayan scored a penalty kick against South Africa also in the World Cup 98.
Salman Al-Faraj scored the fourth kick against Egypt in the 2018 World Cup, to confirm the irony of Al-Akhdar’s success in penalty kicks in the World Cup against African teams.
